The first name of the city was given by the Saxons and referred to its sheltered and inaccessible position – Castrum Clus (Closed Camp). Later, the Hungarians in the area called him Kolozsvar, and the Saxons later called him Klausenburg. The correct name of the city is Cluj-Napoca and comes from the Roman colony that existed here in the second century AD.

Cluj, as most Romanians call it, is home to many period buildings. In its center are medieval houses with massive walls and wide courtyards, and the streets are so narrow that you can hardly imagine that two cars can pass each other.

The places worth seeing are in the perimeter formed by Avram Iancu Square and Stefan cel Mare Square (east), Petru Maior Street (west), Somes River (north) and Avram Iancu Street (south).
