Tour Brasov Peles Castle and Pelisor Castle: Peles Castle has about 170 rooms and was the first entirely electrified castle in Europe. This was possible because electricity was supplied by the Electric Plant on the shores of the Peles stream. It is also important to know that Peles is home to one of the most important and most valuable collections of paintings in Europe – about 2.000 pieces.
Peles Castle was built at the initiative of King Carol I to serve as a summer residence. At the same time, other annexes were raised, such as: Guard Corps, Economat, Foisor House, Gardens, Electric Plant. The “Sipot” Villa was built a little bit later and became for a time the work of the architect Karel Liman. Until the Peles Castle was finished in 1883, King Carol I and Queen Elizabeth lived at Foisor House.
Considered Queen Mary’s “Dream House”, Pelisor Castle is the true image of Queen’s taste in beauty, revealing her bold, mysterious and romantic personality.
The construction of Pelisor Castle began in 1899, following the wish of King Carol I to provide a residence to the hereditary princes Ferdinand and Maria after a project by Czech architect Karel Liman (1855-1929) and the contribution of Viennese decorator Bernhard Ludwig.
At Pelisor Castle grew up the children of the royal couple: Carol – the future king Carol II, Marioara – the Queen of Yugoslavia, Elizabeth – the Queen of Greece and Prince Nicholas.
Queen Mary loved this little castle so much that she returned here to dye. After an amazing life dedicated to her beloved people, Queen Mary passed way on July 18, in her gold room at Pelisor Castle, decorated by herself with the symbols she loved so much – faith, light and eternal life.
