Private Tour from Bucharest to Constanta: Constanta is the fifth largest city in the country, depending on the number of inhabitants, after Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara and Iasi and is an important tourist attraction in Romania.
One of the oldest historically certified romanian cities, Constanta is an unique blend of industry and culture. Once a big sea port, Tomis, it was transformed into a beautiful resort by King Carol I. The oil terminals and shipyards eclipse the modest beach and cliff, but Constanta has the advantage of being centrally located relative to the rest of the seaside resorts, becoming in time the preferred port of cruise ships.
Constanta has its roots in a fishing village from the 6th century BC. The Greeks of Miletus turned the settlement from the Black Sea into a flourishing port called Tomis. Conquered later by the Romans and the Byzantines, it was renamed after the Roman emperor Constantine.
No visit to Constanta would be complete without a walk on the cliff dating from the time of Carol I, who loved the city deaply. The pearl of the cliff is the Casino (1909), built for Queen Elizabeth, Carol’s wife, in a French secessionist style.
Present in probably every single holiday picture, the Casino is undoubtedly the emblem of the city. The building was erected more than 130 years ago, after the end of the Ottoman dommination. The symbol of Constanta still emanates the air of the era in which it was built, even though today it is in an advanced state of interior degradation.
In its glory years, the Casino had several rooms for various recreational activities: a dance hall, two gambling halls, but also two reading rooms, where visitors could read the latest news from local and international press. Sailors from all over the world loved this place and gathered on the Casino terrace, along with the elite of the time.
Today, one can only visit the casino from outside.
Tomis Sea Port is the largest port at the Black Sea and the fourth largest port in Europe. Regardless of the season, the area of the Tomis port is a place where people come to admire the beautiful sea and its playful waves, either from the confort of their cars, or through a refreshing light walk.
During the summer, the gulf of the port of Tomis is often visited by groups of dolphins, perhaps attracted by the beautiful artesian fountain in the middle of the water or even by the tourists who walk quietly on the shore.
Located in Ovidiu Square, this big building hydes a few wonders, and the Glykon snake is perhaps the most important of them. The statue, along with many others, was discovered in the area of the restaurant Colonadelor, in 1962. The Glykon snake is over 1800 years old, has the appearance of a sheep, human hair and the body of a snake. It is considered to be a symbol of fertility and is an unique piece in the world.
